The FLEGT
The first annex of our FLEGT VPA

There is a pleasure news of Thailand that completed the Legality Definition (LD) no.2 through the participatory process of related stakeholder with led by Law Division of Royal Forest Department (RFD) and cooperate with outsider consultant supported by EFI. Thai side had submitted this version to the EU officially a few days ago. There had discussed the next step in the Video Conference on 14 Dec’18 with led by DG-RFD including to a progress of another annexes development under the FLEGT VPA and EU has satisfied on the progress. Especially, the legal reform on land use and forest process.

The Video Conference is a task following the VPA roadmap agreement of Thailand and EU. The draft LD has circulated via TEFSO website and others channel to related people and the public to ensure the transparency of sharing information.

EFI Technical Mission Meeting with Thai Sub-Working Groups (3/2018)

Mr Atthapol Charoenchansa, Deputy Director General of the Thai Royal Forest Department, had attended the 3rd EFI Technical Mission.The European Forest Institute (EFI) represented and led by Mr Alexander Hinrichs and Mr Morne van der Linde.  The meeting hold during 19 -21 November 2018 at Cinnamon meeting room, Cinnamon hotel, Bangkok, and aimed to discuss in-detail over the documents and papers of the VPA with the Thai sub-working groups.

The main issues to be discussed divided into 3 main topics which are; supply chain control on private land including self- declaration and chain of custody, Legality Definition and Import Controls, Supply Chain Control Dataflow and Thai Legality Assurance System (TLAS)

However, resolutions agreed within this meeting had been brought into the discussion in the upcoming video conference on December 2018 as well.

EU and Guyana initial Voluntary Partnership Agreement to combat illegal logging and promote trade in legal timber
The European Commission’s Deputy Director-General for International Cooperation and Development and Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources initialled the text of VPA today in Brussels, marking the formal end of the negotiations.
The VPA outlines the actions Guyana will take to develop systems so that in future it can verify the legality of timber and timber products it exports. Once the VPA is fully implemented, Guyana’s shipments of timber products to the EU will have to be accompanied by a FLEGT licence, demonstrating their legality. FLEGT-licensed products automatically meet the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation

The Corner
The Pilot study: Support mechanism for small, micro and informal forest products enterprises (SmEs), for Reclaimed wood operators in three sub-districts in Lam Phun province: Ban Thi, Huay Yab and Makheau Chae found that most of SmE operators advertise and publicize their own business and products through social media comprising of Facebook and Line application, but they lack of knowledge to effectiveness and efficiency, thus the EU FLEGT Facility, European Forest Institute (EFI) has been cooperating with Ban Thi Sub-district municipality and the Lanna Innovation and Digital Media Develop Centre of Chiangmai University to conduced the training modules on digital marketing on 7 – 8 November 2018, in order to improving SmEs efficiency and effectiveness in digital marketing, in particular social media marketing that already in place and powerful visual channel to drive results and increase households business competitiveness in furniture market.
